Characther Essay For Lamb To The Slaughter Essays - Fiction
Characther Essay For Lamb To The Slaughter Essays - Fiction Characther Essay For Lamb To The Slaughter Character Essay Characterization, a method that an author chooses to develop his/her character, is a very important element in a story. In Lamb to the Slaughter, Roald Dahl, effectively develops the protagonist both directly and indirectly; however, the use of indirect characterization is more dominant because it reveals her actions and how she deals with her conflict, her words, and creating a dynamic character with her words, and her personality. First, she seems like a typical house-wife longing for her husband to return, but something is odd about this particular day; There was a slow smiling air about her, and about everything she didwas curiously tranquilthe eyes, with their new placid look, seemed larger, and darker than before (108). It was almost as if she is expecting something unusual to happen, and that she is preparing for that specific moment. In addition, her actions change from being a wife-pleasing-husband, to a self-conscious woman that knew all of a sudden, exactly what to do, as if she had been prepared for months. Also, in the beginning of the story she is described as a inoffensive, harmless person, but immediately after her husband reveals his burden, she becomes unstable and almost naturally she hits her husband. She simply walked up behind him and without any pause she swung the big frozen leg of lamband brought it down as hard as she could (111). And as strange as it looks, she goes somewhat through a metamorphoses, from being a content house-wife, to a maniac, possessed woman, to the point of killing her husband. Second, she reveals through her words, her duplicity and deceitfulness by exterminating all the evidence left. When the police arrived she trying to hide evidence, asks for her husbands whiskey, Jackwould you mind giving me a drink? You mean this whiskey?Yes, pleaseWhy dont you eat up that lamb that is in the oven? (115,116), and the reader realizes that she tries to convince others with her deceitful lies, and with a concrete set of credible words, she gets away easily; She tried a smile. It came out so peculiarThe voice sounded so peculiar tooShe rehearsed it several times more (112). Mrs. Maloney, had thought about it even before the incident happened, for she tries to look as normal as possible, by acting it out her daily routine. Finally, her personality creates in her a dynamic characterization, and as the reader observes it when she is talking to the shopkeeper, by saying something very odd: I got a nice leg of lamb from the freezerI dont much like cooking it frozenbut Im taking a chance on it this time. You think itll be alltight? (112). What she was really referring, was what she had done just minutes ago. But when she said , at the end, to him if itll be allright? she revealed a weak, fragile nature as if she had been pulled out of a protective coat all of a sudden and left naked, for she is described by the narrator as a loving and faithful wife, who is willing to do anything for her husband. Moreover, at the end when she offers the leg of lamb to the officers, she does another extraordinary act; And in the other room, Mary Maloney began to giggle (116). And by doing so, she was declaring that she was indeed independent, and was mature enough to make her own decisions based on what she thought was the b est, not others. Roald Dahl, developed the protagonist successfully in Lamb to the Slaughter, through a way that is important in this short story. Where indirect characterization is the most predominant in the protagonists actions, words, and how the author creates a convincing dynamic character, which reflects it in the body itself.

Sociolgy I need to tell a story how I did something to benefit myself Essay
Sociolgy I need to tell a story how I did something to benefit myself - Essay Example But who cares For me I was very willing to accept solitude and monotony just to become a well respected basketball player. Of course I had to undergo various RATIONAL CHOICES before embarking the journey towards success. The BENEFITS and REWARDS of become a popular basketball player should be greater than the COSTS it entails. As I have said I knew beforehand that becoming popular requires many sacrifices that would eat up most of my time. But as far as the UTILITY of these sacrifices are concerned, I never regretted in forgoing the joy and excitement that other activities gives. I am determined to accomplish my mission and attain my goal of becoming a popular basketball player in New York State and obtain a full basketball scholarship to Loyola College, whatever it takes. To become a professional level basketball player, an aspirant should undergo certain steps. One of the most essential of these is practice - tons of practice. To do this, I utilized most of my time to practice my shooting skills alone. While most of my classmates are still asleep I managed to wake up at 6 am most mornings during high school and went to the school's gym and took exercise and made 100 foul shots every morning before I enter school. This became part of my morning ritual. I was not contented from this that during breaks and dismissal from class I still shoved dust and snow around the basketball hoop in the school yard to practice my shots. My day virtually revolved around basketball. I was not even satisfied on doing the practices and body conditioning myself. I even asked the services of special people to a point that I even borrowed my uncle's time just to keep my shooting hand accurate and dependable. I asked him to feed me the ball while shooting thousand shots per week. I also undergone training sessions with special trainers thrice a week to get in top shape. Because of my commitment to be the best, I often sacrifice my social life to give way to my practice sessions. While my family was gone to a vacation trip, I was busy dribbling the ball in our regular practices. During the time that my friends are attending birthday parties and other school gatherings, I was immersed in thinking how to help my team win the game. I almost spent my exchanged the BENEFITS of socializing in school just to achieve my dream. In any quest to be the best, I admit that I had to find ways to get to the top whatever it takes. That includes doing the dirty work just to get there. I always assert even to a point that I use aggression just to reach my dream. I believe that this world is not perfectly BALANCED and that I need to use influence, power and other "below the belt" schemes just to be the best. Anyway, this is a dog-eat-dog society that those who are more powerful and "wiser" are more likely to gain advantage necessary for achieving their goals. If justice is being served equally to all people, then why are there criminals, despite being proven guilty for their misdemeanors, are still at large because of their influence and power. Besides, I am using these "devious tactics" not for criminal and evil use. If crooks use these measures to indulge in temporary PLEASURABLE activities and afterwards ending up in PAIN while spending their time in prison, I am doing this so that my parents, my school and my classmates and possibly the United States and the world will be proud of and BENEFIT from me. Because of my

Religion And Politics Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Religion And Politics - Research Paper Example These are the fundamentals questions of this study. In addressing the research questions, we will use the method of case study. The study will focus on the Islamic Republic of Iran because it is currently the most vocal Islamic Republic against the western world. In doing the study, we shall be using the most recent works of authors considered authoritative on the subject. In this study, we shall use peer-reviewed journal articles. We expect that the use of academic journals provide adequate quality control for our sources of insights and data. However, we also use the work of Sial (2006) because even if Sial (2006) is not a journal article, the work can be considered as authoritative because it is a study of the Iranian legal or political system from the point of view of an outstanding lawyer and can be considered as ââ¬Å"authoritativeâ⬠. In this study, the key conclusion we make is that in Islamic Republics, religion plays a very important role in politics. Alamdari (2005, p. 1285) described the earlier political system in Iran as a ââ¬Å"religious populist regime, a tyranny of the majority under the charismatic leadershipâ⬠of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Had Iranââ¬â¢s war with Iraq (1981-1988) did not take place, Alamdari argued that Islamic populism could have ended more quickly after the 1979 Islamic Iranian revolution (Alamdari, 2005, p. 1286). The constitution adopted right after the 1979 Islamic revolution known as the Qanun-e Asasi established the Islamic Republic of Iran (Sial, 2006). The principle of velayat-e faqih (guardianship of the jurist) performs a key role in the government structure of the Islamic Republic of Iran (Sial, 2006). According to Sial (2006), a national referendum in December 1979 approved the constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The 1979 national referendum asked Iranians at least 16 years old whether they want to abolish the monarchy and replace the monarchy with an Islamic Republic (S ial, 2006). The 1979

Understanding Aroma Therapy Essay Example for Free
Understanding Aroma Therapy Essay Abstract à à à à à à à à à à à With the various ways that physical pains can be treated, individuals now have several options and alternatives to choose from. One involves the practice of alternative medicine particularly the practice of aroma therapy. Though the relative effects of such treatment may be subjective in nature, the reported benefit that the practice can create to individuals is an alternative to majority of practices and procedures surrounding the realm of medicine and treatment. à à à à à à With the relevant dynamic and stressful environments individualââ¬â¢s live in, it is vital for each one to have their own outlet to relax and release stress. One approach involves the practice of aromatherapy sessions. By engaging in such, people can have an alternative opportunity to unwind, relieve stress and create a feeling of ease and satisfaction. It is through this that the opportunity of alternative therapies is put in the spotlight and showcases its relative benefits and advantages Defining Aromatherapy à à à à à à à à à à à Like any other alternative practices, aromatherapy utilizes several factors without the use of any medication to alleviate the treatment. ââ¬Å"Aromatherapy can be defined as the art and science of utilizing naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants to balance, harmonize and promote the health of body, mind and spiritâ⬠(National Association of Holistic Aromatherapy, 2006). It seeks to create therapeutic effects on individuals who engage in it by using various forms from the environment. ââ¬Å"Aromatherapy utilizes pure, natural, unadulterated aromatic essences, called essential oils and hydrosols that come from botanical materialâ⬠(Wavelengths Natural Health, 2003). Exhausting Benefits à à à à à à à à à à à Various individuals and practitioners of the mentioned method have showcased the potential benefits that the practice can do to individual health. Since the method involves the sense of smell, it exhausts its benefits in the relative contributions it does on an individualââ¬â¢s brain and senses. The use of aromaââ¬â¢s and hydrosols thus, is the important element in extracting its benefits. ââ¬Å"Herein lies one of the powerful benefits of aromatherapy ââ¬â it can not only help to heal some physical imbalances of the body, but also affect emotions and memoryâ⬠(Wavelengths Natural Health, 2003). à à à à à à à à à à à Another important benefit that the practice does is its contribution towards and individualââ¬â¢s hypothalamus. The hypothalamus creates and stimulates various conditions in an individualââ¬â¢s brain which in turn can exhaust positive responses in manââ¬â¢s physical and emotional state. ââ¬Å"Hormones influence emotions and behavior as well as regulate the activities of organs or specific groups of cells in the bodyâ⬠(Wavelengths Natural Health, 2003). Appropriateness à à à à à à à à à à à The practice of aromatherapy has been viewed by many as a way to alleviate stress and pressures from work and other activities. Significant studies have showcased aromatherapyââ¬â¢s contribution to individualââ¬â¢s health. ââ¬Å"In a study conducted at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York, patients undergoing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reported 63 percent less claustrophobic after getting exposed to the aroma of vanillaâ⬠(ICBS, Inc., 2007). In addition, there are also studies that indicate the effects it contributes towards people who are sick. ââ¬Å"In another study, 122 patients who were in an intensive care unit reported feeling much better when aromatherapy was administered with the oil of lavender (compared to when they were simply given a massage or allowed to rest.)â⬠(ICBS, Inc., 2007). Getting the information needed à à à à à à à à à à à Exhausting relative information about aromatherapy requires a through understanding about the scope of the topic and its relative components. Seeing this, the relevant information for me is the related organizations and associations that cater to the study and development of aromatherapy. This information seemed credible because they had exhausted such information from experience and research. à à à à à à à à à à à On the other hand, there are several that are least credible on my part. These involve websites and encyclopedia articles describing the method and its practices. It lacked credibility because they just mainly derive facts from other sources or lack the depth in research and information concerning the benefits of information. Disclaimers à à à à à à à à à à à Important contradictory information about this therapy involves other companies claim towards scents and hydrosols to contribute something for manââ¬â¢s betterment. It involves a particular form of regulatory standard towards its regulation and control. Since aromas and hydrosols in excess also create negative implications among individuals, further regulation must be created to safeguard users and patrons of such method. ââ¬Å"In 1986, the agency warned that marketing a scent with a preventive or therapeutic claim would make the product a drug subject to regulatory actionâ⬠(Barett, 2001). Further Questions à à à à à à à à à à à One important question surrounding the said method involves the proper amount of aromas and hydrosols to be applied per session. Since the application of scents and aromas is vital to achieve a certain level of therapeutic effect and on the other hand the excess of it can lead to negative implications, one must be aware of how much should be applied to create the desired feeling and benefit. Advocating the practice à à à à à à à à à à à In conclusion, seeing all the benefits and contributions that aromatherapy can create towards individuals, I can be inclined towards recommending it to clients. I would especially recommend such alternative treatment to people who are undergoing stress and pressures from work or to individuals who just need to relax. Just be sure to go to a certified and accredited aromatherapy centers in your area. These people can help you towards your individual needs and create better avenues for satisfaction and healing. What aspects of Charlotte Brontes Essay -- English Literature:
What aspects of Charlotte Bronte's What aspects of Charlotte Bronte's depiction and use of the character of Bertha Mason are most clearly illuminated by Jean Rhys' depiction and use of her parallel character of Antoinette? In Wide Sargasso Sea, written by Jean Rhys in the 1960ââ¬â¢s, is a radical critique of the context of English Imperialism and male dominated society within which Charlotte Bronte wrote Jane Eyre. In order to both expose and oppose the parallels inherent in Jane Eyre, Rhys intertwines in her novel the two reading positions of feminist and postcolonialist criticism. Rhys demonstrates how both social and narrative conventions mandate that certain categories of women must be devalued if other categories of women are to assume importance. She does this by exposing to the reader how Charlotte Bronte in Jane Eyre, in order for her reader to give Jane an assumed importance, devalued by the Creole character Bertha; showing her to be made and giving us Janeââ¬â¢s description of her as ââ¬Å"[she] seemedâ⬠¦a womanâ⬠¦ [she] reminded meâ⬠¦ [of] the foul German Spectre ââ¬â the vampireâ⬠and Rochesterââ¬â¢s comment that ââ¬Å"the lunatic is both cunning and malignant.â⬠Rhys, it seems was politically inspired to rewrite Jane Eyre and write back to the empire. Wide Sargasso Sea is a prequel to Jane Eyre which was written British Empire was at its peak. Jane Eyre was a representation of England to the English. Rhys decided to write back, because of being of white West Indian descent herself, she was offended by the representation of the mad Creole in the novel. Although Rhys says that she is not a conscious feminist her novels are always written from a female perspective and in Wide Sargasso Sea, the male character is exposed... ... express and put forward quite assertively. Christophine in particular, is not afraid to tell Antoinetteââ¬â¢s husband exactly how she feels towards him/ On page 132 for example, Christophine says ââ¬ËI tell her soââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ ¦always it donââ¬â¢t work for beke. Always it bring troubleâ⬠¦so you send me away and you keep all her money. And what you do with her?â⬠and later on further exposes and questions assumptions and values that Antoinetteââ¬â¢s husband when she tells him ââ¬Å"Read and write I donââ¬â¢t know. Other things I know.â⬠So we can see the many ways in which Rhys uses the intersections of feminist and postcolonialist reading positions and criticism to expose certain aspects of character. Whether it be through two narrators, leaving one unnamed, showing many different sides to a story and emphasising and exposing the otherness of each are amongst many other narrative strategies.

On the Job Training Essay
OJT is a three letter acronym for ââ¬Å"on-the-job trainingâ⬠, which is a form of training taking place in a normal working situation. OJT training, sometimes called direct instruction, is one of the earliest forms of training (observational learning is probably the earliest,). It is a one-on-one training located at the job site, where someone who knows how to do a task shows another how to perform it. In antiquity, the kind of work that people did was mainly unskilled or semiskilled work that did not require specialized knowledge. Parents or other community members, who knew how to do a job necessary for survival, passed their knowledge on to the children through direct instruction. On-the-job training is still widely in use today. In fact, it is probably the most popular method of training because it requires only a person who knows how to do the task, and the tools the person uses to do the task. It may not be the most effective or the most efficient method at times, but it is normally the easiest to arrange and manage. Because the training takes place on the job, it can be highly realistic and no transfer of learning is required. It is often inexpensive because no special equipment is needed other than what is normally used on the job. The other side is that OJT takes the trainer and materials out of production for the duration of the training time. In addition, due to safety or other production factors, it is prohibitive in some environments. Training is the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and competencies as a result of the teaching of vocational or practical skills and knowledge that relate to specific useful competencies. Training has specific goals of improving oneââ¬â¢s capability, capacity, and performance. It forms the core of apprenticeships and provides the backbone of content at institutes of technology (also known as technical colleges or polytechnics). In addition to the basic training required for a trade, occupation or profession, observers of the labor-market[who? ] recognize as of 2008[update] the need to continue training beyond initial qualifications: to maintain, upgrade and update skills throughout working life. People within many professions and occupations may refer to this sort of training as professional development.

Gandhis Vision and Life in Attenboroughs Films - 1172 Words
Mohandas K. Gandhi (1869-1948), the man, the legend, is still echoing in the contemporary world. He had a vision for his birthplace, in the wake of colonization and war, to be tolerant, violent-free and neutral towards all religions. Gandhi had chosen the secular state, that is, the state that was neutral but not hostile to religions (Parel Brown, 2011, p. 161). He rejected what was considered progressive and fashionable; to put the responsibility of state cruelty on the victims, criticizing them for fighting excesses. Subsequently, affording the perpetrators an opportunity to inflict more punishment on the people. Through discussing Gandhiââ¬â¢s philosophical approach and Attenboroughââ¬â¢s film successes in depicting his ideas, this essay will demonstrate how Gandhiââ¬â¢s vision and life relates to that of the Sufi Sheikh and monk in Al Mureed and Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring Again films respectively. During the early 1940s, India was going through a historical turmoil agianst British colonization. Gandhi, among others, refused submission to the perpetrators. He realized that submission demeans human dignity and ensures absolute slavery. They see life only in terms of jobs, even if menial in nature, and some sort of economic benefits even if these are leftovers of what is rightfully yours. Their advocacy is for grooming people to become well-fed slaves instead of accepting temporary hardships for a life of freedom and dignity. For them submission is a supreme virtueShow MoreRelatedQuaid E Azam7455 Words à |à 30 Pagesafter Pakistan gained independence from the British Empire.
