Highlight the views of a number of characters regarding love and marriage in Romeo and Juliet, appreciating the social, historical and cultural influences of the time Essay Example For Students

Highlight the views of a number of characters regarding love and marriage in Romeo and Juliet, appreciating the social, historical and cultural influences of the time Essay In this play there are seven main characters: Romeo, Juliet, Mercutio, Lord and Lady Capulet, Friar Laurence, and the nurse. All of their views on love and marriage are different. Here Ill be looking at Juliets, Mercutios, and Lord Capulets views in great detail. I choose these characters as their views on love and marriage vary in great detail. At first Juliet does not want to marry, she says It is an honour that I dream not of. She does not care about wealth or status, just about love. She does not want to marry someone she does not love. She believes that marriage is a holy, sacred thing. Juliet falls in love quite quickly. Even though Juliet does not want to marry, she tells her mother she will look to like, if looking liking more. In other words, she wants to please her parents and be obedient but she doesnt really want to. This is because at the time the play is set, daughters had the duty to obey their parents. Juliet says this even after her mother tells her how wealthy Paris is. Her mother uses phrases like, that in gold clasps locks in the golden story, to persuade her daughter, yet it does not work, this shows that Juliet is not just interested in his wealth, just whether she likes him or not. When Juliet first meets Romeo, they share a sonnet together in Act I scene V from line 93 to 110. Romeo ends up kissing Juliet twice. This shows that Juliet liked him from the start, or she would not have let him kiss her. Juliet falls in love with Romeo very quickly without even knowing his name. Juliet asks her nurse to ask for his name and says, If he be married, my grave is like to be my wedding bed. She loves him even after she finds out whom he is, my only love sprung from my only hate! In Act II scene II Juliet talks about her love for Romeo without knowing Romeo is listening to her, she says things like be but sworn my love, and Ill no longer be a Capulet. Then she is embarrassed that Romeo heard her talk about love before he did, else would a maiden blush bepaint my cheek for that which tho hast heard me speak to-night, and traditionally, at that time, the man would say he loved the girl first. It would be the man who courts the girl, and not the other way round. At the start of the play, Juliet does not want to marry, yet when she is in love with Romeo, they marry the day after they meet, in Act I scene VI by Friar Laurence. For by your leaves you shall not stay alone till holy church incorporate two in one. Romeo and Juliet eloped, which was a scandalous thing to do. It was a secret marriage, which didnt happen that often back then. They lived in an Italian society, which means that arranged marriages were more the normal thing to do. All this shows that Juliet believes that marriage is a big thing, and is not to be taken lightly. When Juliet finds out that Romeo killed her cousin, Tybalt, she at first condemns Romeo, then when she remembers he is her husband, she tells herself off for not honouring him, for tis a throne where honour maybe crowned. Then later on when she finds out she is going to marry Paris, she tells Friar Laurence she would rather walk in thievish ways, and do other things which are even worse instead of marrying Paris while her first husband is still alive. This shows that she believes that marriage is a holy thing, which you cant mess about with, for instance she cant have two husbands, if both are alive, just to please her father because it doesnt follow her beliefs. .uc46e55fdef9f92f9481be5263e230ed0 , .uc46e55fdef9f92f9481be5263e230ed0 .postImageUrl , .uc46e55fdef9f92f9481be5263e230ed0 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uc46e55fdef9f92f9481be5263e230ed0 , .uc46e55fdef9f92f9481be5263e230ed0:hover , .uc46e55fdef9f92f9481be5263e230ed0:visited , .uc46e55fdef9f92f9481be5263e230ed0:active { border:0!important; } .uc46e55fdef9f92f9481be5263e230ed0 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uc46e55fdef9f92f9481be5263e230ed0 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uc46e55fdef9f92f9481be5263e230ed0:active , .uc46e55fdef9f92f9481be5263e230ed0:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uc46e55fdef9f92f9481be5263e230ed0 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uc46e55fdef9f92f9481be5263e230ed0 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uc46e55fdef9f92f9481be5263e230ed0 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uc46e55fdef9f92f9481be5263e230ed0 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uc46e55fdef9f92f9481be5263e230ed0:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uc46e55fdef9f92f9481be5263e230ed0 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uc46e55fdef9f92f9481be5263e230ed0 .uc46e55fdef9f92f9481be5263e230ed0-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uc46e55fdef9f92f9481be5263e230ed0:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Dancing at Lughnasa EssayIn conclusion, I believe that Juliet believes in love at first sight, she believes in true love and that she does not care about the persons background or family, just about the person. Juliet believes that marriage is holy and sacred and that she should honour her husband, no matter what. This is a typical Roman Catholic viewpoint. Yet it is not a typical viewpoint for at the time, marriages were normally arranged by the father, love was not considered, only the wealth and the family of the man were important. Mercutio, compared to Juliet, has a very course view on love; he is only interested in the sexual aspects of love. He mocks Romeo for being gentle, he ridicules the lover and he makes rude, suggestive jokes. Mercutio teases Romeo from the start for being a lover. Romeo says I have a soul of lead so stakes me to the ground I cannot move. In reply Mercutio tells him, you are a lover: borrow cupids wings. He jokes about Romeo having tender feelings, if love be rough with you, be rough with love, and prick love for pricking and you beat love down. Mercutio believes that love is just an illusion, an invention, made up in dreams by Queen Mab, he says she gallops night by night through lovers brains, and then they dream of love. Again Mercutio mocks love by saying that Romeo is already dead: stabbed with a white wenchs black eye. Mercutio is rude to women which shows that he is not looking for love, because if he was then he would respect them as Romeo does. Mercutio is rude to Juliets nurse, he says that she should hide her face; for her fans the fairer face. In other words he says that she is ugly. In conclusion I think that Mercutio does not respect love for what it is, he just loos towards the sexual aspects of it. He does not mention marriage much, yet I make the assumption that he has the same view on it as he does on love. He likes to mock Romeo for being a lover. Lord Capulet has again a different view on things compared to Juliet, his daughter, and Mercutio. He is a very moody, changeable person. In those times people had arranged marriages. At first he thinks Juliet is too young to get married and then later he changes his mind. Juliet is 13 years old yet it was normal for girls to marry at that age, her mother was probably 12 when she got married and had children when she was 13. He does not care if Juliet loves the man or not, and he does not care about the person, just his wealth, appearance and status. To him, money comes first. He arranges the marriage for a wealthy connection for the family. In Act I scene II Capulet says his daughter is too young to get married. My child is yet a stranger in the world, she hath not seen the change of fourteen years. Yet in Act III scene V, Lady Capulet tells Juliet that she will marry the County Paris. The County Paris, at Saint Peters church, shall happily make thee there a joyful bride. Lord and Lady Capulet arranged Juliets marriage without her consent. This shows that Lord Capulet does not think love is an important part in a marriage. At first he cares a little bit about Juliet loving Paris, but woo her gentle Paris, get her heart, my will to her consent is but a part, but he wants an aristocratic, noble man for her, as she is the hopeful lady of my earth. In other words he wants a good son in law to inherit his land when he dies. .ua339e181c3dd528fc8853867b7dd01f8 , .ua339e181c3dd528fc8853867b7dd01f8 .postImageUrl , .ua339e181c3dd528fc8853867b7dd01f8 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ua339e181c3dd528fc8853867b7dd01f8 , .ua339e181c3dd528fc8853867b7dd01f8:hover , .ua339e181c3dd528fc8853867b7dd01f8:visited , .ua339e181c3dd528fc8853867b7dd01f8:active { border:0!important; } .ua339e181c3dd528fc8853867b7dd01f8 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ua339e181c3dd528fc8853867b7dd01f8 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ua339e181c3dd528fc8853867b7dd01f8:active , .ua339e181c3dd528fc8853867b7dd01f8:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ua339e181c3dd528fc8853867b7dd01f8 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ua339e181c3dd528fc8853867b7dd01f8 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ua339e181c3dd528fc8853867b7dd01f8 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ua339e181c3dd528fc8853867b7dd01f8 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ua339e181c3dd528fc8853867b7dd01f8:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ua339e181c3dd528fc8853867b7dd01f8 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ua339e181c3dd528fc8853867b7dd01f8 .ua339e181c3dd528fc8853867b7dd01f8-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ua339e181c3dd528fc8853867b7dd01f8:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Scene or section EssayLord Capulet becomes quite moody and angry when Juliet says she does not want to marry Paris, he is more concerned with the fact that he has been looking for a good suitor for a while and has now found one rather than the fact that his daughter does not love the man. His small speech in Act III scene V, lines 177-197 makes this apparent. He has draconian views; he would use force to get his own way, and cant comprehend why Juliet doesnt want to marry. He threatens to ostracize her if she doesnt marry Paris. In conclusion I think he does not think much of love and he believes that people do not need to love each other before they marry, it just helps if they do. He believes that marriage is not a holy thing, more of a way to get a wealthy connection for the family. They live in a patriarchal society, a male dominated society. Lord Capulet is a patriarch, he is the head of the house so therefore Juliet has a duty to obey him, he cant see what is wrong with an arranged marriage.

The Relation Between Medical Education and the Medical Profession

Question: What tensions do you think might experience arising from the differing worldview of administrators, healthcare providers, and patients? Answer: Worldview may be defined as the underlying set of beliefs and assumptions which determine the cultural interpretation and explanation of a particular experience. It is expected that the increasing diversity of stakeholders in the healthcare sector would lead to frequent tensions amongst the healthcare providers and seekers leading to adverse health outcomes. Consider a set of native population with high incidence of a particular disease that carry the worldview that all sickness has supernatural origin and requires divine intervention for treatment. As a result, such community may approach a healthcare practitioner only as a last resort and thus may result in delayed diagnosis and lack of adherence to medical intervention suggested by the practitioner, which leads to tension amongst the providers and seekers (Burger, 2001). Further there are groups of population who may believe in alternative medicinal therapies but the healthcare practitioner believes and practices only practices ap proved in medical science which would result in healthcare intervention not being successful. Additionally the administrators when planning health intervention should keep the cultural factors in mind as the healthcare system adopted by the White Australians is not acceptable to native and migrant groups who have different value and belief system. It is imperative that the administrators and healthcare professionals must take into consideration the worldview held by their patients and offer customised intervention which do not reject their worldview but actually respects it. It is only through building bonds based on mutual trust and respect that the benefits of healthcare could be reaped by all sections especially the marginalised and vulnerable population (Tilburt Geller, 2007). Who Is an Architect an Example by

Who Is an Architect? Architecture has always been one of the most rapidly evolving areas of human performance. Since ancient times, and across different cultures, architecture was inevitably associated with the art of construction. With time, the products of technological development have changed the image of architecture; an architect was no longer a builder; rather, he was turning into a professional technologist and businessman. Despite the growing interest to architecture as an area of professional activity, we still lack a clear definition of who an architect is. Despite the fact that the word architect seems to have one semantic meaning, it is filled with numerous hidden connotations, which vary from culture to culture and make the definition of an architect as intangible as architecture itself. Need essay sample on "Who Is an Architect?" topic? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you Proceed Architecture vs. an Architect: the Force of Evolution The art of architecture is inevitably associated with the art of building; but do we have the right to limit an architects role to that of a builder? In the course of architectural evolution, architects functions were never limited to building; on the contrary, architects comprised numerous roles and functions that changed under the impact of the changing social and cultural orders. Long before the appearance of a self-identified architectural profession, most American cultures recognized some of their members as specialists with superior skills or knowledge of building, yet their roles varied from culture to culture (Upton 247), and only by the beginning of the 18th century America has gradually approached the modern meaning of architecture as the reasonable combination of construction, management, leadership, and supervision. The evolution of architecture symbolizes the long journey of architecture as an art of construction to architecture as business. At the beginning of the 18th century, architecture as business and science was deeply disorganized. The roles of architects varied from culture to culture; the architectural functions in urban territories were completely different from those in rural areas. Architects varied in their skills, from small craft workers who restricted themselves to equally small building and repair jobs to large-scale contractors or undertakers (Upton 248). Although craft organizations were called for disciplining architecture as business, professional unions lacked a single and relevant definition of architecture, and as a result, of an architect. While some were designing buildings based on their knowledge of craft, others were deeply fascinated with the art of design. Slowly but steadily, architecture was turning into a continuous line with art and science at one end, and wi th business and customer service at the other. By the beginning of the 20th century, architecture has finally become a profitable area of business performance. Who is an Architect? As we try to define the role and place of an architect in the modern structure of social and economic relations, we face the lack of appropriate criteria that could be used to produce a single and relevant definition of the architect. Sociologists define a profession as a full-time occupation that has its own training schools, a professional organization, licensing and other forms of community recognition, a code of ethics, and the right of self-governance (Upton 250). Taking into account the changeability of architecture across civilizations and cultures, and the changeability of the architects roles, the sociological definition of a profession does not leave any space for change; moreover, it borders on standardization and significantly limits the scope of the architects knowledge, skills, and practical obligations. Architecture is art; and art is intangible. Architecture is business; and business is subject to changes. Certainly, the segmentation of the American economy calls for the separation of handwork from headwork; in this context, the architect is gradually acquiring the features of a widely accepted and recognized profession. Simultaneously, industrialization and reorganization of labor change the traditional image of architecture, and now like the most successful producers of consumer goods, large, centralized, corporate architectural firms offer a highly polished, high-quality, predictable product (Upton 254). However, these economic and social winds do not change the essence of our relations with architecture: here, categorizing is equal to stereotyping, and stereotyping is inappropriate in architecture. Evidently, the time has come when we must recognize that like art, architecture enjoys a special status arising from its traditional role as a vehicle of social identity and from the metaphorical power of architecture as a symbolic or sign system (Upton 255). Architecture is more than a simple profession; architecture is the language of art that cannot be defined in strict and limited terms. To be an architect actually means to be an artistic persona with a self-conscious rhetoric of integrity, embattlement, and singularity (Upton 265), similar to Frank Lloyd Wright who was the first to epitomize the architect. Architecture is business, and business requires professional knowledge, but architecture is more than profession. We cannot limit our understanding of architecture to the use of jatakas, which undermine cognitive exclusivity, exposing it as a hollow pretence (Upton 268), because architecture is both unique and exclusive. Architecture is a lifestyle, combined with academic educ ation and practical experience. Architecture is selling ones unique and intangible style, which is later reflected in completely tangible works of architectural art. Like physician or lawyer, the word architect may have one semantic vocabulary meaning; but unlike physician or lawyer, the word architect has multiple hidden connotations the connotations that change under the impact of external social and cultural factors and that deprive us of a chance to produce a single, relevant, and never-changing definition of the architect. Conclusion Throughout the centuries, and across cultures, the architects roles were constantly changing. From being a builder and supervisor, architects have gradually turned into businessmen with sound academic knowledge and excellent leadership skills. To define an architect as a profession means to limit the scope of the architects roles; that is why we will hardly be able to define who the architect is. All we can do is to reconcile with the long-standing vision of architecture as a lifestyle reflected in wonderful and always unique works of architectural art. Works Cited Upton, D. Chapter 6. Art. Characther Essay For Lamb To The Slaughter Essays - Fiction

Characther Essay For Lamb To The Slaughter Essays - Fiction Characther Essay For Lamb To The Slaughter Character Essay Characterization, a method that an author chooses to develop his/her character, is a very important element in a story. In Lamb to the Slaughter, Roald Dahl, effectively develops the protagonist both directly and indirectly; however, the use of indirect characterization is more dominant because it reveals her actions and how she deals with her conflict, her words, and creating a dynamic character with her words, and her personality. First, she seems like a typical house-wife longing for her husband to return, but something is odd about this particular day; There was a slow smiling air about her, and about everything she didwas curiously tranquilthe eyes, with their new placid look, seemed larger, and darker than before (108). It was almost as if she is expecting something unusual to happen, and that she is preparing for that specific moment. In addition, her actions change from being a wife-pleasing-husband, to a self-conscious woman that knew all of a sudden, exactly what to do, as if she had been prepared for months. Also, in the beginning of the story she is described as a inoffensive, harmless person, but immediately after her husband reveals his burden, she becomes unstable and almost naturally she hits her husband. She simply walked up behind him and without any pause she swung the big frozen leg of lamband brought it down as hard as she could (111). And as strange as it looks, she goes somewhat through a metamorphoses, from being a content house-wife, to a maniac, possessed woman, to the point of killing her husband. Second, she reveals through her words, her duplicity and deceitfulness by exterminating all the evidence left. When the police arrived she trying to hide evidence, asks for her husbands whiskey, Jackwould you mind giving me a drink? You mean this whiskey?Yes, pleaseWhy dont you eat up that lamb that is in the oven? (115,116), and the reader realizes that she tries to convince others with her deceitful lies, and with a concrete set of credible words, she gets away easily; She tried a smile. It came out so peculiarThe voice sounded so peculiar tooShe rehearsed it several times more (112). Mrs. Maloney, had thought about it even before the incident happened, for she tries to look as normal as possible, by acting it out her daily routine. Finally, her personality creates in her a dynamic characterization, and as the reader observes it when she is talking to the shopkeeper, by saying something very odd: I got a nice leg of lamb from the freezerI dont much like cooking it frozenbut Im taking a chance on it this time. You think itll be alltight? (112). What she was really referring, was what she had done just minutes ago. But when she said , at the end, to him if itll be allright? she revealed a weak, fragile nature as if she had been pulled out of a protective coat all of a sudden and left naked, for she is described by the narrator as a loving and faithful wife, who is willing to do anything for her husband. Moreover, at the end when she offers the leg of lamb to the officers, she does another extraordinary act; And in the other room, Mary Maloney began to giggle (116). And by doing so, she was declaring that she was indeed independent, and was mature enough to make her own decisions based on what she thought was the b est, not others. Roald Dahl, developed the protagonist successfully in Lamb to the Slaughter, through a way that is important in this short story. Where indirect characterization is the most predominant in the protagonists actions, words, and how the author creates a convincing dynamic character, which reflects it in the body itself.

Sociolgy I need to tell a story how I did something to benefit myself Essay

Sociolgy I need to tell a story how I did something to benefit myself - Essay Example But who cares For me I was very willing to accept solitude and monotony just to become a well respected basketball player. Of course I had to undergo various RATIONAL CHOICES before embarking the journey towards success. The BENEFITS and REWARDS of become a popular basketball player should be greater than the COSTS it entails. As I have said I knew beforehand that becoming popular requires many sacrifices that would eat up most of my time. But as far as the UTILITY of these sacrifices are concerned, I never regretted in forgoing the joy and excitement that other activities gives. I am determined to accomplish my mission and attain my goal of becoming a popular basketball player in New York State and obtain a full basketball scholarship to Loyola College, whatever it takes. To become a professional level basketball player, an aspirant should undergo certain steps. One of the most essential of these is practice - tons of practice. To do this, I utilized most of my time to practice my shooting skills alone. While most of my classmates are still asleep I managed to wake up at 6 am most mornings during high school and went to the school's gym and took exercise and made 100 foul shots every morning before I enter school. This became part of my morning ritual. I was not contented from this that during breaks and dismissal from class I still shoved dust and snow around the basketball hoop in the school yard to practice my shots. My day virtually revolved around basketball. I was not even satisfied on doing the practices and body conditioning myself. I even asked the services of special people to a point that I even borrowed my uncle's time just to keep my shooting hand accurate and dependable. I asked him to feed me the ball while shooting thousand shots per week. I also undergone training sessions with special trainers thrice a week to get in top shape. Because of my commitment to be the best, I often sacrifice my social life to give way to my practice sessions. While my family was gone to a vacation trip, I was busy dribbling the ball in our regular practices. During the time that my friends are attending birthday parties and other school gatherings, I was immersed in thinking how to help my team win the game. I almost spent my exchanged the BENEFITS of socializing in school just to achieve my dream. In any quest to be the best, I admit that I had to find ways to get to the top whatever it takes. That includes doing the dirty work just to get there. I always assert even to a point that I use aggression just to reach my dream. I believe that this world is not perfectly BALANCED and that I need to use influence, power and other "below the belt" schemes just to be the best. Anyway, this is a dog-eat-dog society that those who are more powerful and "wiser" are more likely to gain advantage necessary for achieving their goals. Religion And Politics - Research Paper Example These are the fundamentals questions of this study. In addressing the research questions, we will use the method of case study. The study will focus on the Islamic Republic of Iran because it is currently the most vocal Islamic Republic against the western world. In doing the study, we shall be using the most recent works of authors considered authoritative on the subject. In this study, we shall use peer-reviewed journal articles. We expect that the use of academic journals provide adequate quality control for our sources of insights and data. However, we also use the work of Sial (2006) because even if Sial (2006) is not a journal article, the work can be considered as authoritative because it is a study of the Iranian legal or political system from the point of view of an outstanding lawyer and can be considered as â€Å"authoritative†. Alamdari (2005, p. 1285) described the earlier political system in Iran as a â€Å"religious populist regime, a tyranny of the majority under the charismatic leadership† of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Had Iran’s war with Iraq (1981-1988) did not take place, Alamdari argued that Islamic populism could have ended more quickly after the 1979 Islamic Iranian revolution (Alamdari, 2005, p. 1286). The constitution adopted right after the 1979 Islamic revolution known as the Qanun-e Asasi established the Islamic Republic of Iran (Sial, 2006). The principle of velayat-e faqih (guardianship of the jurist) performs a key role in the government structure of the Islamic Republic of Iran (Sial, 2006). According to Sial (2006), a national referendum in December 1979 approved the constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The 1979 national referendum asked Iranians at least 16 years old whether they want to abolish the monarchy and replace the monarchy with an Islamic Republic (S ial, 2006). The 1979
